Who Experiences Depression?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 17 million adults and more than 3 million adolescents (ages 12-17) experience depression each year.

A study from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in 2017 revealed that Utah has the highest depression rate in the nation. It is also in the top 5 states in the nation for suicide. In a study by the Utah Department of Health and the CDC, suicide rates among youth in Utah (ages 10-17) increased 141% between 2011 and 2015, a rate about six times the national average. Many people in Utah don’t seek treatment for depression, often because they don’t know where to go for care or they feel ashamed to admit they need help.

It’s important to understand that depression isn’t something you can or should try to get over on your own. For many people it requires the help of a therapist, medication, or a combination of both.

A Proven Approach to Depression Treatment

Traditional therapy is still one of the most effective ways to treat depression for adults, children, and teens. At Live Well Counseling, we approach depression treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), EMDR, mindfulness, and mind-body bridging. Research has shown that CBT is an effective method to help with symptoms of depression. During CBT your therapist will work with you to identify:

  • Cognitive patterns, or negative thoughts that contribute to the way you feel
  • Behaviors that result from the negative thoughts

The next step is to help you find effective strategies for changing the way you think and behave to deal with these negative thoughts as they come. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), a therapy originally developed to help with trauma and PTSD, has proven effective in helping some people with depression. Our therapists in South Jordan, Utah are trained in EMDR techniques and can determine if this is the best option to help with your depression.

Working with Your Doctors

For some people the most effective way to treat depression is through a combination of therapy and medication. If you are currently taking medication and seeing a doctor, our team will work with all the health professionals involved in your care so everything is coordinated.
